Migrating from outlook Express to Windows Live Mail

Migrating from outlook Express to Windows Live Mail

Through Microsoft Outlook Express, an internet-based mail client, you can send and receive email. The latest versions of Microsoft Windows no longer support (or offer) Outlook Express. Windows mail actually replaced it, and Windows live mail later replaced it.

STEP 1. The Outlook Express Store folder transferred to the new computer.

Copy Outlook Express’ store folder from the Windows XP computer to the Windows 7 (or 8, 8.1) computer (for example on its desktop).

Please note that all Outlook Express mail is stored in one folder entitled “Outlook Express” in your profile under your current username (Your_Username) located at:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{<OutlookExpressIdentityName>}\Microsoft\

STEP 2: SET UP WINDOWS LIVE MAIL (WINDOWS ESSENTIALS).

You can do the following on a computer running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1:

1. Download Windows Essentials.

2. Start the Windows Essentials installation by clicking Run.

3. Choose the programs you want to install from the “Choose the programs you want to install” menu.

Make sure only the Mail program is selected and click the install button.

Continue with the next step after the installation is complete.

STEP 3. MESSAGES FROM OUTLOOK EXPRESS TO WINDOWS LIVE MAIL

Outlook Express mail messages can be transferred to Windows Live Mail (or to Outlook) as follows:

Create an account for Windows Live Mail (don’t sign up).

Click Import Messages at the top of the menu.

When prompted, choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 in the Windows Live Mail Import dialog(s).

Navigate to Browse and click it.

Choose to open the Outlook Express folder you copied previously from the old computer (at Step-1) and click OK.

Click the Next button.

To import only selected folders, click Selected folders at the following screen. To import all Outlook Express folders/email messages, click Next.

Upon completion of the import, click Finish.

In Windows Live Mail, you should now see your emails (under Storage Folder > Imported Folder > Local Folders).

After transferring your email messages to Windows Live Mail if you use this program as your email application, proceed to the final step, which involves moving your mail messages from Live Mail to Outlook.

STEP 4. MESSAGES FROM WINDOWS LIVE MAIL TO OUTLOOK.

Choose Export email > Export messages from the main menu of Windows Live Mail.

You can choose Microsoft Exchange on the Windows Live Mail Export dialog.

The information message will appear. Click OK.

The name of the Outlook profile, where the Windows Live messages will be imported, should be selected. (such as Outlook)

All folders option allows you to export all email messages, while Selected folders allows you to export specific folder(s) of messages.

After exporting is complete, click Finish.

You can now open Outlook after closing Windows Live Mail. Outlook should now receive your messages.

Your task is completed!
